Summer is over, autumn is here, cooler winter to follow next. The change in season means you will have to run different electrical appliances. Here are our autumn electrical safety tips to make your home and family safe.
#1. Check Extension Cords
As the temperature dips, you will use your outdoor space more. So you will require a few extension cords to light up your outdoor space and create beautiful outdoor living spaces. Inspect your extension cords for any damage, and if you want to use them for outdoor decorations, ensure they are weather-rated. This exercise will prepare you to create a more relaxing outdoor space for autumn and impending winter.
#2. Sweep Dry Leaves and Clean the Area
In autumn, leaves start falling, which is beautiful to look at, but when they are left around your home, they can cause likely fire hazards. When hit with a spark, dry leaves can catch fire instantly. Make sure you sweep them away from any outdoor outlets, power cords, and light fixtures. You need to keep your outdoor air conditioning unit clean of autumn debris because debris will not allow your ACs to run at their peak.
#3. Deal with Tree Branches
Cut back the branches of the trees in your yard, especially around overhead cables. This electrical safety tip may look a little untimely, but it’s better to deal with this chore sooner rather than later. Cut tree branches at least ten feet from any cables, and you’re ready for the autumn and upcoming winter.
#4. Be Careful when Using Devices Outside
Moisture and rain do not quite blend with electricity, so it is imperative to take all necessary safety measures when using electrical devices in the outside space. Ensure all your devices used outside are weatherproof. All outdoor electrical outlets should be GFCI outlets covered by bubble covers to shield them from rain and safeguard users against possible shocks.
#5. Test Your Smoke Alarms
As the weather gets cooler, you will be using more electrical devices and appliances. Thus, you need to make sure all your smoke alarms are in working condition. It will ensure that when a fire breaks out, you and your family will be warned before the fire gets out of control. If you want to get your smoke alarms checked and tested, you can call IZCO Electrical, and our expert electrician will come to your place and see if they are reliable.
#6. Inspect the Cold Weather Tools
Take the leaf blower out from the storage and clean off the accrued dust from it and check for any unfamiliar deterioration. The same you should do for all your cold-weather tools before using them. And don’t forget to check their power cords because a damaged power cord can leave you susceptible to electrical fires. And if you find any damage to your electric tools, repair or replace them as needed.
#7. Use Your Electric Blankets Safely
After autumn, cool winter will start, and electric blankets are excellent to keep warm, provided you use them safely. Before using your electric blankets, make sure they are in good condition and working. So you need to check the electric blanket for damage, particularly the power cord for nicks, cracks, or frying. Never tuck your electric blanket under mattresses, and while it’s in use, do not place comforters or bedspreads on top of the blanket.
