In Australia, every state has to follow government guidelines for electricians who work with the power lines connecting to residential and commercial premises. And only a particular category of an electrician is permitted to work with hazardous currents, and the ASP )Accredited Service Provider) Scheme governs these.
Level 2 electrical services can be offered by an ASP (Accredited Service Provider), a certified electrician from an electrical services company or an electrician working independently. Let’s understand the ASP Scheme and the services that Level 2 electricians can provide.
Understanding the ASP (Accredited Service Provider) Scheme
The ASP scheme is governed by the NSW Department of Industry and divided into three categories. Here, we’ll focus on Level 2 electrician services.
If you spot a professional working at the peak of a power supply pole in your street, perhaps they are an ASP Level 2 electrician. And within the Level 2 classification, there are categories of work that authorised electricians can perform. You’ll need to contact a Level 2 electrician to carry out the following electrical works:
- Install or repair an underground service line to connect your property to the electricity grid.
- Install or repair an overhead service line to connect your property to the electricity grid and install an electricity meter.
- Disconnect the property from the electricity grid.
- Install steel poles, relocate points of attachments, upgrade customer service mains, and upgrade a 3-phase power supply.
- Install solar meters.
The employees and subcontractors of a Level 2 ASP electrical service must possess the necessary qualifications and be registered with the scheme to become eligible to request your local electricity supplier for approval to work on electrical power lines near your property.
How Can Electricians Qualify for Accreditation?
Under the ASP scheme, an electrician’s accreditation is valid for 12 months and must be renewed annually. An electrician must satisfy at least one of the following criteria to qualify for accreditation at a particular level.
- An electrician must be registered within the ASP scheme to perform the services at their level.
- They are a past employee of an NSW electricity distributor and can satisfy the authority that they meet the requisites of the level.
- Electricians must have a relevant training qualification from an RTO (Registered Training Organisation) and have completed the appropriate training for that level of work.
Verify Credentials Before Contracting an Electrician
Upon your request, an electrical services provider should be able to show you their certification, highlighting the services they can provide legally. Browse their website to see some samples of work they perform.
In this way, an ASP Scheme works, and this information will assist you in making the right decision and engaging a fully qualified electrician.
